Muliple clinical studies have shown Inositol to have many wonderful health benefits.
Inositol has been classified as a member of the vitamin B complex, often referred to as vitamin B8, and is present in all animal tissues, with the highest levels in the heart and brain. It is part of the membranes (outer coverings) of all cells, and plays a role in helping the liver process and export fats as well as contributing to the function of muscles and nerves. Inositol is required for proper formation of cell membranes, effects nerve transmission and helps transport fats within the body. Inositol helps to maintain proper electrical energy and nutrient transfer across the cell membranes.
Inositol has been shown to have a positive effect on depression. People who are depressed may have lower than normal levels of inositol in their spinal fluid. In addition, inositol participates in the action of serotonin, a neurotransmitter known to be a factor in depression. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that transmit messages between nerve cells. For these two reasons, inositol has been proposed as a treatment for depression, and preliminary evidence suggests that it may be very beneficial. In one study conducted in Beersheva Israel, the study showed that patients who were being treated for bipolar depression with Lithium were found to have up to an 80% reduction in normal Inositol levels. (Biological psychiatry: 1993, vol 34, n 12, pp. 839-852) Inositol has also been tried for other psychological and nerve-related conditions with positive results.
Some Naturopaths have referred to Insoitol as a Marriage saviour. Good levels of Inositol results in a calming effect in general. Slow to anger has a positive effect on relationships. Insoitol has been sometimes referred to as Valium for the brain, though there is no drug type experience, the person and those around them notice a much calmer demeanor in general.
Want fewer mood swings? When postmortem brain tissue has been examined from deceased bipolar patients, low inositol levels were found in the frontal cortex, as well as in lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell responsible for immune responses. In 1995 a double-blind, controlled study of inositol treatment for depression, conducted by J Levine, Y Barak, M Gonzalves, H Szor, A Elizur, O Kofman at the RH Belmaker Yehuda Abarbanel Mental Health Center, Bat Yam, Israel, the study showed improvements in unipolar and bipolar depression. (Published in Am J Psychiatry 1995; 152:792-794 )
Only 70% of patients respond to current treatments for panic disorder, and many discontinue drugs because of side effects. In June 2001 a double-blind, controlled, crossover study of Inositol versus Fluvoxamine for the treatment of panic disorder was conducted by Palatnik A, Frolov K, Fux M, Benjamin J at the Mental Health Center, Faculty of Health Sciences, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheba, Israel. ( J Clin Psychopharmacol. 2001 Jun;21(3):335-9). The study was undertaken to compare the effect of inositol with that of fluvoxamine drug in panic disorder. In the first month, inositol reduced the number of panic attacks per week by 4.0 (2) compared with a reduction of 2.4 (2) with fluvoxamine. Because Inositol is a natural compound with few known side effects, it is attractive to patients who strongly desire to avoid taking psychiatric medication. Continuing reports of inositol's efficacy in the treatment of depression, panic disorder, and OCD should stimulate replication studies. Sleep and Serotonin Levels
Studies have shown that Inositol can increase Serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin is one of the many 'transmitter' chemicals that helps to pass nerve impulses from one nerve cell (neurone) to the next over the synapse (gap between two neurones). Good levels of Serotonin gives us self-confidence, a feeling of safety and security. Inositol is also beneificial in making us sleepy and supplementing with Inositol has helped many obtain a good nights rest.
